San Diego WISH 14th Annual International Peace and Humanity Day Ceremony Commemorating the 78th Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Free Live Broadcast on August 5th, 2023, at 4 pm PDT

To commemorate San Diego's 14th Annual International Peace and Humanity Day, the San Diego World-wide Initiative to Safeguard Humanity (SD-WISH) and the San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society (SDYSCS) are organizing a special online broadcast.

Olga Ilinska, a Kyiv-born Ukrainian native, is a linguist and translator fluent in English, Japanese, and Russian languages. With a background in international affairs, she has worked with the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine and the United Nations Development Programme in Kyiv. Born in July 1986, just two months after the Chernobyl incident, Olga experienced the potential dangers of nuclear incidents from a young age. Her journey as a survivor and her escape from Ukraine during the Russian invasion highlight the ongoing threat of nuclear war.

The interview with Olga Ilinska during the online broadcast will delve into her experiences as a survivor of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and her courageous escape from Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Her firsthand accounts will shed light on the ongoing threat of nuclear war and the critical importance of nuclear disarmament.

The online broadcast will also include the ringing of the San Diego Friendship Bell, a pre-recorded message from SD-WISH co-founder Dr. Akiko Mikamo from Hiroshima, and the reading of letters from the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. SD-WISH co-founder and Hiroshima survivor Mike Kawamura will ring the San Diego Friendship Bell at 4:15 pm PDT to commemorate the exact time the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima (8:15 am JST). This will be followed by a special video presentation produced by the San Diego High School Japan Club.

Matthew Pilger, an SD-WISH Youth Ambassador and Sophomore at Mission Bay High School, will conduct the ceremony.

The broadcast will be available for viewing on SD-WISH's official website (www.sdwish.org), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SanDiegoWISHOfficial), and YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/SanDiegoWISH).
